The Lions Club of Blackall Range was chartered on August 23rd this year with 33 members. Its formation will be celebrated with a Charter Dinner hosted by the Maleny Blackall Range Lions on 2 November.

The process of creating a new Lions Club to serve the communities of Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton began with an information evening at the Mapleton Bowls Club in February this year. Existing Lions who live at our end of the range were delighted with the interest shown. Twenty-four people joined that night, enough to form a new club immediately.

It was decided however to operate as a branch club of the Maleny Blackall Range Club for some months to allow the new members to get a feel for what a Lions Club is all about. Under the guidance of new President Geoff Runge and Liaison Officer Peter Jensen, the new Blackall Range Branch Club hit the ground running.

Since February our members have taken an active part in running the 2019 Welcome to the Hinterland Dinner, have held a very successful morning tea to raise funds for two childhood cancer charities, have carried books for the book sale and sizzled sausages at Mapleton Library, been involved in weeding at Russell Family Park, helped prepare for a new surface at the Montville Tennis Club, parked cars at a fund raising afternoon for Blackall Range Care and begun work on refurbishing the Montville State School Bell Tower.

One member has hosted a Lions Exchange student from Japan, and we have provided a barbeque lunch for a group of over 25 Lions International Youth Exchange students after their Kondalilla Falls walk. In September we sponsored a Cyber Safety Information Evening at Montville State School, provided hamburgers for the Mapleton Meet and Greet afternoon at the Bowls Club, and collected our calendar from the printer. The Blackall Range Calendar, previously called the Montville to Mapleton Calendar, is on sale at various outlets in the area and we encourage everyone to not only support the businesses that supported us through sponsorship, but to buy a calendar to help us fund future Lions projects on the range.

Lions International is the world’s largest service club. It is made up of community minded people who enjoy serving their communities, whether local, national or international, in a spirit of fun and friendship.

Potential members are always welcome to come to a meeting or two to ‘check us out’. We have a business meeting and a dinner meeting each month. You may know of a project that Lions could provide assistance with. In either case, please contact Marcia, our secretary, at http://blackall-range@lionsq3.org.au.
